A Simple Act of Service

Elder Jemison and his companion were teaching a young man, named Eric who lived in a small shack behind a house in Soweto.  The door to the shack had fallen off of its hinges and Eric would have to prop the door in the doorway. After teaching a lesson one day, the missionaries had gone to a nearby member’s home and borrowed a hammer and nails. They returned to Eric’s and had fixed his door.  All it took was about 15 minutes.

Sometime after Elder Jemison had been transferred from Soweto, he received a letter from Eric.  Eric had joined the Church. He said it was that day when the missionaries had fixed his door that he realized that they were true friends and not just there to read from “the Mormon book.”
